Dogs love bacon and giving them a treat may seem like a good idea. I had someone contact me about the food she was feeding her dog and as we were talking she shared that she was pouring bacon grease on her dog’s food. Her dog loved it, but she was putting her dog’s health at risk.
Feeding your dog bacon or bacon grease is not recommended.
Cured meats really aren’t good for anyone, including your dogs. Bacon is preserved through curing, salting or smoking. The bacon grease is especially bad for your dogs.
Why bacon is bad for your dogs:
Whether bacon is cook or raw, it is not a good idea to be giving your dog bacon. Feeding your dog bacon can cause many health problems, including pancreatitis. Pancreatitis sometimes require surgery and can be fatal.
Other health issues feeding your dogs can cause:
- Obstructive pulmonary disease
- Bowel or other types of cancer
- High levels of sodium
The grease contains everything that makes bacon unhealthy. It’s pure grease.
When it comes to your dogs, skip the bacon and bacon grease. If you want to top your dog’s food with some human food, stick to veggies and some fruits but be sure it's veggies and fruits that are safe for your pets.
