There are many success stories about using hypnosis to treat depression. In a state of hypnosis, you may access your subconscious mind, releasing patterns held there that contribute to your feelings of depression. Your hypnotherapist may make suggestions while you are in a relaxed state, helping you to become free from old patterns of thought or behavior and create new, positive ones.
For example, poor choices in eating, choosing to smoke, or not getting enough sleep may significantly impact your feelings of depression. By helping you to make better choices about what you eat, you may find hypnotherapy also helps your depression. Or by giving up smoking, you may find yourself feeling better. Or because you are able to overcome insomnia and finally get a good night’s sleep, you wake up in a better mood.
Hypnosis and Depression
Studies on hypnosis have proven its effectiveness as a treatment for depression.
One study integrated hypnosis with cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) and show hypnosis to be an effective treatment for depression by producing 6%, 5%, and 8% greater reduction in depression, anxiety, and hopelessness, respectively, over and above CBT. Furthermore, this was maintained at 6-month and 12-month follow-ups.
In another study, 78% of participants reported improvements in quality of life, anxiety, and depression, while 82% of participants considered it worthwhile, despite no improvements in their symptoms.
