Microbiome Basics

The human microbiome is a hot topic these days. It is often mentioned in the news and talked about more frequently in everyday conversations. There is still a lot of confusion over what exactly it is and how it can impact our health. Here are 4 basic things to know about your microbiome:

1. What is a microbiome?
Your microbiome is a collection of microbes (microscopic organisms) that live in groups in your body. They specifically inhabit a human’s skin, nose, mouth, digestive tract and vagina.

2. What do microbiomes do?
Human microbiomes play an integral role in health. There is a lot of research underway currently to explore the roles that microbiomes play in not only gut health, but mood, anxiety, the immune system, digestion, protection against some cancers and more.

3. What is microbiome’s role in disease prevention?
This expanding body of knowledge on the role of microbiomes is revealing that a healthy microbiome in an individual is related to decreased incidence of diabetes, obesity and other diseases.

Factors that negatively impact a person’s microbiome:

  • C-section birth
  • Antibiotic use
  • Stress
  • Surgery
  • Illness
  • Trauma
