You’ve Become Disconnected from Your Food

Many diet and nutrition “experts” have convinced us that all we have to do is measure our food, count calories and exercise more and we’ll be healthy and happy. If the food fits into our allotted macros (the percent of carbohydrates, proteins and fats), the quality of food doesn’t matter. We are measuring our food without regard for quality and becoming disconnected from the nourishment and taste. The popularity of food trackers and exercise trackers has conditioned us to see food as something that needs to be measured in grams, cups, ounces, fat grams, carbohydrate grams and proteins grams. These measurements can be useful, but maybe it’s time for a new way to evaluate your food intake.

Focus first on the quality of your food. Eating the same foods as you do now, but eating a higher quality version (like organic or homemade) will go a long way in helping your body digest and absorb nutrients better.  “Just eat real food” was a very popular saying years ago.  It is still very relevant today.  Allow your body and your brain to take in the whole experience of the food…the smells, the tastes, the textures. This simple act will activate your parasympathetic nervous system response (the relaxation response).  Which in turn makes digesting and absorbing the nutrients easier and more efficient. Your body won’t need to crave the nutrients it was missing if you otherwise ate in a stressful situation, say…in the car or sitting at your desk.

Why do you think so many people use food to feel better and eat emotionally?  Learn to embrace your body’s wisdom and find ways to prepare and consume high-quality food that your body and brain will appreciate. Your feeling of fullness and satiation will be satisfied with less food but more nourishment. And who knows…you may even lose a few pounds.
