Recently, I was at Mass General to visit a family member and I became aware of a growing epidemic in our country. I passed hundreds of people during the week and everyday the problem seemed worse. At one point, it surrounded me by every person I passed! What is it you ask? The short answer is text neck. The longer answer is hundreds of people were walking to and fro with their head bent down, not paying attention at all to where they were headed, and were texting. It was almost humorous, if I didn’t know first hand what that one behavior can do to a body.
Watching your electronics in your lap or on a desk and/or texting is causing the problem called text neck. It occurs because your head weighs approximately 50 lbs and when constantly off balance will stretch the neck muscles beyond their capacity and cause chronic pain. The other thing that happens is your chest muscles are forced to contract which then causes more strain to your neck. This vicious cycle can leave you in unbearable pain before long and throw your posture out of balance.
