Scoliosis Awareness Month!

As you move down the spine vertically, there are 4 natural curves of the spine. However, if you have a sideways curvature of spine, then you have a scoliosis.

Scoliosis is a spinal condition where you have torsion/rotation of a vertebrae, which may produce one or multiple curves (C or S curves). Some of its causes are:

- Atlas Subluxation (Descending Scoliosis)
- Pelvic dysfunction (Ascend Scoliosis)
- Neuromuscular conditions involving fascia, muscle, nerves
- Internal issues with organs/glands
- Birth defects affecting the development of the bone
- Compression, degeneration, spinal lesions
- Idiopathic – no specific cause/combination of factors

Normally schools would perform screenings for scoliosis with the Adam’s Forward Bend Test, but this is happening less frequently across the U.S. Doctors are now consistently saying to “not worry” about the scoliosis.

Why Would You “Not Worry?”

Many doctors suggest to wait until the scoliosis begins to “bother” you, and if the curvature goes beyond 40-45°, then you should think about surgery – disc fusion that involves putting hooks, screws, and rods into your body. A mild scoliosis can easily continue developing without treatment and then lead to further threatening complications.


Don’t Let Your Child Walk Around Without Action!

Biological and mechanical forces combine to produce a disease process that deforms the spine. Scoliosis is a challenging and complex clinical problem, which is why it needs to be addressed immediately.


The sooner you identify a scoliosis (ideally before puberty for children), the better chance you can stop its development and even correct it with careful manipulation and specific corrective exercise. You do not want to have a question of “chicken or the egg?” If you can get an X-Ray to identify identify the vertebrae that’s twisted and the start/end of the abnormal curve that is perfect – however in my experience most doctors will also say “You only get X-rays, MRI’s if you’re planning to get surgery.”
