With so many artificial fragrances and candles in many households and workplaces in recent years, I’m not surprised at seeing such a high number of patients with asthma symptoms, coughs and allergies. As a naturopathic physician licensed in Oregon, I tell all of my patients to be aware that these harmful chemicals put unneeded stress on lungs that may be already susceptible to developing symptoms due to other health conditions.
Here are my quick and easy candle and air freshener replacement.
All you need is some lemons, rosemary, a pot, water and a stove top
1. Slice two medium-sized lemons and place in a small saucepan.
2. Add 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary.
3. Add 1-2 inches of water (about 1-2 cups).
4. Bring all ingredients to a boil, and then as soon as it reaches a boil reduce the heat to a low simmer. Add another inch of water every hour to make sure the ingredients do not burn. Keep enough water in there so that the ingredients are able to float on the surface.
Note: As long as you periodically replenish the water as it steams out of the pot, this could last a few days!
CAUTION: never leave a stove burning unattended and turn it off at night while you sleep. You can also consider making this in a crockpot but again, don’t leave it on unattended.
