Let’s be honest, most of our mornings look similar to this:
- You roll over and turn off your alarm, which is usually your phone.
- You quickly check Facebook, Instagram, email etc. before your eyes are even actually open.
- Then, you wander into the kitchen and make your coffee or tea.
- At some point, you head to the bathroom, take a shower and get on with your day.
Maybe you wake up when the kids wake you up by jumping in your bed or crying. You rush to take care of them, feed and clothe them and an hour later you still look and feel like you rolled out of bed.
Maybe you are up before the sun, you quietly tip-toe around the house as to not wake anyone up, get ready as fast as you possibly can and leave before there is any evidence you were even awake.
No matter which version of this little story is you, I bet your feel all or some of these emotions:
- Every day is the same
- There is little joy in waking up in the morning because it’s nothing special, just the start to yet another day.
I used to feel the same way!!! I was full of excuses as to why I could not have a healthy morning routine and that was all they were... excuses.
- I don’t have enough time
- I am too tired
- It’s not really going to change my day
- What is the point?
- I am not going to be consistent enough for it make a difference
So after some motivation from a dear friend, I started small. I started with journaling, trying to not sleep with my phone by my bed. I started by making a conscious effort to spend some time on me before diving into the electronics. What I have found is incredible!!!
- It is not as hard as I thought
- I was able to slowly build up my own individual morning routine
- I am consistent!!!!
- I feel empowered, ready to take on the day with drive and purpose • I am happier
- I sleep better
And the list goes on
Good news! I am going to lay out some simple options and some ideas of how you can utilize them in your morning routine and you can pick what works for you, try different things, experiment, you will get it in your groove!
STEPS OF A MORNING ROUTINE
Start Small and pick one to two ideas that you want to integrate into your morning. Once you feel comfortable and consistent with that routine you can start to expand. (Maybe mornings are just not going to work for your life, good news! It’s ok. Find another time during the day that you are going to consistently set aside for yourself). Whatever you do decide to do start small and build on. If you try and start with a HUGE morning routine all at once you will most likely get frustrated and stop. However if once a month you add on a new step to your routine by the end of the year you could have 12 new healthy steps in your routine! That is pretty powerful.
SPIRITUAL WELL BEING
Let’s start with spiritual wellness, or our minds. What can we do at the beginning of our day to ensure that we start with a clear fresh mind each day. Well if you ask me one of the most important things you can do to ensure that you have a good morning is prepare the night before. I am not going to expand too much on this topic right now, if you want to learn more you can listen to my podcast on sleep and sleep routines by clicking HERE. The most important thing to think of the night before is, ‘what is on my schedule tomorrow.’ Have everything laid out the night before to make your morning less rushed. So now let’s dive into the morning time!
Journaling (5-10 minutes)
Have your journal handy so you can simply roll over and grab it. Take some time to just write!
What to write about:
- What did you dream about?
- How do you feel about the day ahead?
- What are some of the things you wish to accomplish?
- What are you grateful for?
- “I am” statements that empower you (these will be different for everyone but here are some examples)
- I am happy and relaxed
- I am making new contacts in my business every day
- I have healthy eating habits and enjoy working out
Meditation (5-10 Minutes)
If you already have a personal meditation practice that is wonderful! If you do not, start simple. Search youtube for morning meditation. You will find tons of options, or download an app like Headspace, that walks you through meditating and helps you set goals.
Read a book
I prefer personal or professional development books, but maybe you want to read a love
novel, then go for it. What I want you to think about is, if you set aside just 10 minutes to read a day you will have read for 3,650 minutes in a year. Let’s say you average 1 page per minute and the average book is 300 pages you will read approximately 1 book a month. There goes that excuse that you don’t have time to read!
Top 3 book recommendations for morning routine reading: The Big Leap, A year of Living Consciously, The Art of Possibility
Tongue Scrape and/or Oil Pull
While we sleep our bodies detoxify themselves and much of those toxins end up in our mouths and it is best to get it out of our systems and bodies right away. For me I start by tongue scraping. I use a tongue scraper similar to this one HERE. I scrape from the back of my tongue forward rinsing the scrape off each time and I repeat for about 20-30 seconds or until the scrape is clear or almost clear.
I then drink a big glass of water and it’s time to oil pull. I take 1 table of coconut oil (start smaller like 1 tsp) and add a drop or two on OnGuard to the coconut oil and then I swish it around in my mouth for 10-20 minutes. I wrote a whole blog post on oil pulling so if you want to learn more about that check THIS out.
Gentle stretches or exercise to get the body moving (5 minutes)
Maybe you already have some favorite stretches, or you like to do sun salutations from yoga. If so great, but maybe you have no idea. When I can’t figure out what to do but I know I want to get a small work out out in I just do this with 7 minute work out! Sounds easy but you will actually be sore :)
Go for a walk (10-15 minutes)
Are you a nature person? Does spending 10-15 minutes outdoors ll your tank for the day? Then gofor a walk!!! You will feel incredible.
Make a Green Smoothie (5 minutes)
Mix up your favorite Fruits and Veggies and make yourself a power smoothie to start the day. Here is my favorite recipe.
- 1⁄2 cup green grapes
- 1 Orange
- 1 Apple
- 1 Carrot
- 1⁄2 cup Pineapple
- 1 cup Spinach or Wheat Grass
- 1/8 cup greek yogurt
- 6 ice cubes
- Blend and enjoy
